Why Integrate Via API?

Telematics hardware collects the data; APIs make it useful. By pulling vehicle data into your own systems — ERP, dispatch, billing, custom dashboards — you eliminate manual data entry, enable real-time decision-making, and build workflows that no off-the-shelf product offers out of the box.

Common API Endpoints

EndpointReturnsTypical Use
/vehiclesAsset list with VIN, make, modelFleet inventory sync
/vehicles/{id}/tripsTrip history with start/stop, distance, idleBilling, payroll
/vehicles/{id}/dtcsActive and historical DTCsMaintenance automation
/vehicles/{id}/locationReal-time GPS + speedDispatch, ETA
/vehicles/{id}/fuelFuel level, consumption rateFuel management
/webhooksEvent-driven push notificationsReal-time alerts

Authentication & Rate Limits

Most telematics APIs use OAuth 2.0 with API-key scoping. Rate limits vary: Geotab allows ~1 req/sec per device; Samsara allows 100 req/min globally. Design for webhook-driven architectures where possible — push beats polling for real-time use cases and consumes fewer API calls.

Example: Auto-Creating a Work Order

When the telematics API pushes a severity-1 DTC via webhook, your middleware: (1) looks up the vehicle in your CMMS, (2) creates a work order with the DTC code and freeze-frame data, (3) assigns the nearest available technician, and (4) sends a push notification to the driver with instructions. Total latency: under 10 seconds from engine-light-on to work-order-created.
